Guernsey to prepare for the 'next generation digital future'

States approve a framework that will allow Guernsey to use 5G, bringing faster download speeds to devices.

Deputies unanimously voted for what the Committee for Economic Development describes in its policy letter as the 'next generation digital future.'

What they have approved is setting the groundwork for 5G by enabling Guernsey's Competition and Regulatory Authority to develop and implement a spectrum licensing framework, that will be used for 5G, and successive technologies in the Bailiwick.

5G is the successor to 4G and has been in use in some countries since 2029.

It enables faster download speeds (150-250Mbs is quoted for the average user) and the signal can travel between devices very quickly.

Telecoms operator Sure will develop the technology and CEO Alastair Beak says they will invest millions into it:

“Deputies’ unanimous approval of a policy letter to allow 5G technology in Guernsey is a vote for the island’s future. It means that Sure can confidently press ahead with our plans to invest up to £48m to build a world-class 5G mobile network which, coupled with the fibre network, will completely transform telecoms."

“Islanders will benefit from 5G’s faster speeds and greater coverage, and our new network will be part of Guernsey’s critical national infrastructure that supports our increasingly digital lives.”
