Deputy Jonathan le Tocq is suspended from the senior States committee after being arrested by Guernsey Police on suspicion of telecommunications offences.
No details have been released, but in the UK this can include sending offensive messages to using a network for fraudulent purposes.
The arrest was made on Monday morning, 21 July, but the news broke last night.
Guernsey Police issued a statement just before 9:00 pm on 22 July, saying they were investigating a 61-year-old man on suspicion of telecommunications offences, who they had arrested the morning before.
Less than 30 minutes later, a Policy and Resources statement said deputy le Tocq had been arrested and that the remaining members had agreed he would not take part in committee work at this time.
He has not been charged with any offence, and Guernsey Police are reminding people that the investigation is ongoing.
Policy and Resources says it will not comment further.
Deputy Le Tocq has served as Guernsey's Chief Minister and is its External Relations politician, forging links abroad.
He was returned to the States in the June election and polled ninth.
