More time given to fix wall causing Rouge Bouillon traffic chaos

Traffic chaos on Rouge Bouillon is set to continue into next month, because an order served on the property owners to fix an unstable wall has been extended.

Temporary traffic lights were put in place between Drury Lane and Palmyra Road at the start of June because of the issue, which has led to long tailbacks, particularly at school-run time.

A 'Dangerous Building Notice' was served on two properties because of a small unstable roadside retaining wall on private land, which is deemed at risk of collapsing onto the public footpath and road.

The owners of the affected properties were given four weeks to sort the problem, but that deadlines has now been extended for another fortnight, until Friday 10 July.

In a statement, the Infrastructure and Environment's Regulation Department said:

"This extended period is considered a reasonable timeframe for the property owners to make the necessary arrangements to formally appoint a contractor and to complete the required remedial works.

"The Directorate continues to work constructively with the landowners to facilitate this process and to ensure that the works are delivered safely and as promptly as possible."

Three weeks into the disruption, Channel 103 heard from motorists frustrated at sitting in traffic while no work was being done.

"It's a joke, and they don't seem to be anything. It doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?"

"Nothing has been done since they put the traffic lights up, and it's a nightmare, especially when the kids are coming out at 3pm."

Channel 103 has attempted to contact the property owners for comment.

Last year, a nearby part of Rouge Bouillon was shut for six months due to an unrelated structural issue.
