Royal Square hosts Corn Riots Festival

Jersey's Corn Riots Festival returns to the Royal Square this weekend.

There will be performances from 18 live bands and poetry readings.

The event has been going since 2021 and marks what happened in 1769 - when public protest over rising food prices paved the way for democratic law making.

On the bill are Jèrriais folk poppers Badlabecques, Ollie Wilson Band, electro pop warriors Turquoise Days, Gypsy Punk good times with the Gonzo’s and The Shabs, Josh Davey (Young Contemporary Musician of the Year) in Ctrl3, Tibetan Funk, three huge community ensembles and honorary popstars The Vingteniers.

The free event is open 12pm to 10pm on Saturday and until 8pm on Sunday.

Constable of St Helier, Inna Gardiner says:

"The Corn Riots hold a special place in Jersey's history.

"The events of 1769 marked a pivotal moment in the Island's democratic development and continue to remind us of the importance of civic participation and community action.

"Today, the festival offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect on that history while enjoying everything that makes Jersey special.

"From music and performance to food, language and heritage, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

Senator Serena Kersten, who has ministerial responsibility for arts, culture and heritage is also encouraging people along.

"Events like this connect our Island communities and help create a vibrant and welcoming town centre."
